 Large flake in Dalkey 03 Aug 2012 12:18  # 1
Hi folks,

Just to let you know, that a large flake broke off on Street Fighter, left of the undercut hold. This happened within the lasst week sometime. I noticed a few Continentals dry tooling around the Quarry before. If you are, STOP. This may be the result of all the wear and tear i am coming across. Ice Axes & Crampons aren`t for dry rock.

Rgds Ray.

Hi Ray,

I think there has been quite a bit of loose rock on Streetfighter for a while - does not surprise me that a piece has fallen off. I'd say if there are no crampon scrapes it's just a case of normal wear and tear due to traffic.

Some of the middle grade routes in Dalkey are showing signs of this. Jameson 10 & Superette spring to mind.

There are some gear placements used in the past I wouldn't trust any more....

Mr. D,
Cheers for that. It can be worrying sometimes. I reckon overtime and with all the traffic has a knock on affect. The Eliminates has a few as well, doesn`t help considering your first bit of gear is at the top!

Thanks Dave for adding insight to this. The absence of crampon scrapes means we can't blame dry tooling for a flake deciding to yield to gravity.

On my first visit to Alps (MI meet in July), we climbed Mt Disgrazia, which had alot of dry rock which we climbed using ice axes and crampons.

I'm not planning to do any dry tooling in the quarry but as an aspiring Alpinist, it'd be awfully nice to have a local place to go practice.

Appreciate any suggestions!

Geraldine,

drytooling in Ireland?.....sacrilege....would never be seen doing that. And certainly wouldn't admit to it on a forum. Send me an email.

Dave
