Hi All
Again we are heading towards uncertain weather for the weekend in Glendalough but we will keep an eye on it and plan to make the most of it. Judging from enquiries there as many queries about what the hut is like as much as there are about climbing on the Famous Granite crags.
As required every year we could do with the participation of as many strong multipitch climbers as possible to take the lead and look after new members on the crag. If you could let me know in advance you participation it would be much appreciated in planning for the weekend. We will use Acorn Buttress as a base camp and this will give ample single pitch options at Acorn and Expectancy
New Members, at this stage - all of you should be competent belayers and getting proficient at climbing, just remember a good second is a good belayer, the climbing although important is secondary. Talk through with your climbing partner the plan, the rules before you step off the ground.
Gear required
Climbing Helmet [No helmet, No climbing - Cycling Helmets are not permitted or Canoe Helmets]
Harness
HMS screwgate Karabiner
Belay device (ATC type or similar, not figure of eight)
Rock-climbing shoes Entry / Moderate Level, they should be tight but not hurt [much]
Extra Requirement for Glendalough Weekend.
Gear extractor / Nut key
Medium sling (Dyneema 12mm x 1.2 meter long)
Prussik loop (6mm 1.0m to 1.2m cord with Double Fishermans Knot)
1 or 2 extra screwgate Karabiners Medium
Whatever the weather we plan to make a go of it.
Accommodation is 5.00 for the night, payable by Sunday morning, there is loads of bed space in dorm style rooms, and mattresses are provided; just bring a sleeping bag & pillow as required. There is also the option of under canvas if you wish.
Itinerary:
Saturday 16th
9.00 Meeting upper car park, Glendalough
9.30 Last depart for the Crag [organised departure]
you can always follow down past the miners village, up a few zig zags and look up to the crags on the right [north side of the valley]
Climbing Single and Multipitch Weather permitting we will get everyone on a multipitch climb and a couple of single pitch
Wet Weather Options Hike up to Crag and show routes, etc then continue to do a circuit of Glendalough
19.30 Dinner in the Hut [If anyone would like to go in the pot for my Chocolate Chilli please let me know, I will also do a veggie [with flavour] option, I am not sure what the constitution says about vegans. I will take care of the food, if anyone out there would like to bring dessert knock yourself out. There are plenty of facilities to cater for yourself, bbq, etc. Bring your own beverages
drink responsibly, especially if you are planning on climbing hard the next morning
22.00 Lights Out!! Ye right
Sunday 17th
Get up whenever you like [within reason], clean up from the night before, carry on where you left off on Saturday, go climbing in Glendalough, Luggala, Barnbawn, bouldering in Glendalough or Glendassan, Go Hill Walking from the Hut or from wherever you fancy
the options are endless
Booking
Please let me know by email if you intend going down for the weekend so we can plan accordingly, hope to see as many of you down as possible. Oh & those who want to test my Chocolate Chilli let me know.

Love to stay over , but I can only climb on the Sunday (family commitment on the Saturday).
If someone needs a partner, for some multi-pitch, I can pick up from the Hut on Sunday morning or meet at crag?

I have got about 20 booked in so far, most opting for the Chocolate Chilli...no veggies so far which is great [but you are still welcome]
The weather forecast is about as bad as the Part one but we will make do. It's worth the walk up to have a look at the crag. I am going to bring a bouldering mat as a bit of bouldering at least will give us a challenge with dry spells either in Glendo or in are home valley of Glendassan.
One other bit of gear that is essential for the Glendalough Crag is boots or approach shoes as there is a large boulder field to be crossed....it has claimed a few famous ankles in it's day.
The more the merrier and we could do with a couple more experienced hands
Look forward to seeing as many as possible

Thanks to all who took part at the weekend, especially Jason on Saturday, Willie, John D, Geraldine and Peter for Sunday. It was good to see James and Alun Richardson on Saturday night & all the new members. The weather was disappointing but those who made the effort still enjoyed themselves and got something out of it. I should say thanks to those who went ahead with the postponed weekend. The sum of the parts always greater than the individuals.
There has been a plus side to the poor weather and that is the spirit of perseverance [this should be a prerequisite for full membership], we have managed to keep it going. Folk have developed a few mountaineering skills, knowing when to bail, abseiling in the rain and most importantly keeping each others spirits high with encouragement. I recall 4 of us spending a wet Thursday on Winders with Liam Convery some 10 years ago...it has stood me well.
Anyway Part Trois is on the horizon, I reckon we should high jack Saturday 11th of August to complete the Glendalough Trinity....no sleeping required afterward.
Declan C is correct; make what ever night you can a Thursday....we might also try Dermot's suggestion of a learning to fall night in UCD.
At the committee meeting last week we discussed the tradition of IMC Thursday nights. It is the considered opinion that Thursday is open night so essentially the intro programme is never ending it just does not have an agenda. It is encouraged that more experienced members mentor, partner, encourage and advise others to develop their climbing ascendency.
Climb Safe
Tony B
p.s. Learn to fall this Thursday in UCD before you head to Fair Head
p.p.s. Dermot, I won't be around due to work commits...are you available

No climbing in Glendo for most of the posse but what a crew! A fabulous gathering in the hut on Sat and a range of good humoured fall-back plans on Sunday.
A bunch of us had an enjoyable hike on Sunday with no midges for the most part :)
