 For your ice only! 09 Mar 2010 19:20  # 1
At 9am this morning the temperature was well below zero at the carpark in Glendalough, the air was bitingly cold and there was a layer of ice covering the upper lake.
But once the head of the lake was reached and the shadow of the Spink left behind for the sun, it was a different story. By the time the point on the zig-zags where you stike up for the crag was reached it was warm enough to take off the jacket. While the lake was still in cold shadow, the crag was drenched in sunshine and the rock warm to the touch.
I was joined by Herbert and Martina and, as Martina had never climbed on the main face, we decided to take up where we left off in December, with a romp up Prelude/Nightmare.
The crag is in great nick, the main face as dry as snuff and, although I didn't get around that far, I would say even routes like Setanta and Sebastian are dry and ready to go. If this weather lasts for another week even Cornish Rhapsody will dry out.
It was wonderful to be on Nightmare ledge in brilliant sunshine while, across the valley, the small streams were ice-bound, and the upper slopes covered in snow.
The crag won't get better than this, in fact, it may well revert to a more normal state once this dry spell is over.
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may...

Hi Gerry,
I climbed Setanta last weekend with a friend of mine Neil. It was bone dry. Also did the three in one on the main face.
We were looking at Cornish also and vowed to get up there as soon as possible, while it is so dry. The crag is in great nick and warm in the sun.... A sign of things to come I hope!

Cheers

Dermot
