IMC does Heavy Water |

HI Guys,
just a heads up that a gang of us are returning again to Norway for ice climbing this winter. We'll be in Rjukan from Feb 12th until Feb 21st. So far we've got 8 on board but will be great to have more along on the trip. This year once again we've taken a couple of cabins in the Rjukan Hytteby (www.rjukan-hytteby.no) these cabins are comfortable and ideally located in the valley. They book out pretty quickly so a good idea to book early if you can. Other alternatives are the excellent hostel Rjukan Gjestgard (www.rgg.no) the apartments at Vemork (www.rjukan.co.uk) or the cabins at Rjukan Hytte og Caravanpark (www.rjukanhytte.com)
Again this year we're flying with Ryanair to Torp so a car hire is necessary, its about 3 hours to Rjukan from Torp depending on road conditions and of course you'll need the car to get around the climbing areas, however, split among a group of 4 or so the costs are not too bad.
The guide book for the area is the excellent Heavy Water from Rockfax and is available in Great Outdoors and Waterstones. Plenty of the climbing can be done on Top rope for those new to ice climbing. Terry, Conor D or myself will be happy to have a chat with anybody who would like to come along and we'll provide what advice we can but be prepared to be self sufficient as it's a bit bloomin' cold to be a group activity :-)
Hope to have a bit more Paddy Whackery on the ice with ye

Hi Gwyneth,
hire cars don't come equipped with snow chains but you can buy your own, they are not very expensive. Tyres are winterised so you'll almost always get away without chains, however they make it a bit easier in places like getting up to Krokan and Ossimosis plus if you want to go up to the ski centre. Not sure if you flying to Torp but DON't follow the Rockfax guidebook directions to Rjukan, they take you over a horrid high mountain route in the snow and ice. Best route from Torp or Oslo is motorway to Drammen, then A road to Kongsborg/Nottoden/Rjukan. If you want any other info feel free to email me direct ei6fr@gofree.indigo.ie
Any yes plan on lots of climbing but very little drinking

Declan

Thinking of heading to Rjukan with Steve McEvoy for a week at some stage between Feb 13-26. Flexible on exact dates and duration. Is anybody interested in sharing a Car and Accomodation?

I'm just back from norway. I just wanted to say a quick thank you to all the people who gave me advice in preparing for the trip, the people who lend me gear. And naturrally everybody who was with me in Rukan. I had a really good time.
I also wanted to writte a little something for people like me who have diificulty de deal with the cold, but i think it s a bit pointless. You can be as prepared as you can, when temperature drop to around -10 or 12, it s hard. I got really lucky than during most of the week it was around -2 or 5, really nice temperature for ice climbing.
Rukan look amaizing the higher goerge are really picturesque. The climbing area are really easy to access. As for the climbs, and the quality of the ice i can t really say, as it was my first time ice climbing. I really enjoyed for sure.
See you all
Edwige

Sounds like a great trip, and I hope a good time was had by all! So, to everybody who was there, why not share your experiences with the rest of the club and write a little article for the website about the trip? No joycean skills needed, write it whatever way you want: facts 'n' figures, an epic route, the crack that was had, a set of pics with a few words, whatever. Send your stuff to me ( webmaster-AT-irishmountaineeringclub-DOT-org ) and I'll put your name up in lights.
Tony.
