The IMC has a history going back
sixty years, and has over 200 members, who engage in all aspects of
mountaineering and rock-climbing.
The club organises climbing and
hill-walking and social events all year round for its members, and also
encourages its
members to organise activities of their own. We organise training
activities as needed for groups of members, including the very popular annual
rock-climbing introduction, held in April each year. We own a
climbers' hut in the Wicklow mountains where members can stay overnight
and use for various events, by arrangement.
The subscription
fees also include MCI mountaineering insurance cover (see details here),
discount (usually 10%) at most major outdoor-equipment shops, access to the club's extensive library, the quarterly club newsletter, and the MCI's quarterly Mountain Log magazine.
Membership is open to anybody over 18 years old who has an interest
in mountaineering. There are two levels of membership, Associate and
Full. The only differences are that Full members must have become competent in basic rock-climbing and in mountain navigation and
safety, and are entitled to vote at general meetings and join the committee if elected.
Prospective members are welcome to join in our regular Thursday night social events without obligation.
Current annual membership fees (renewable on 1 November each year) are as follows:
- Standard membership - €52
- Student/unwaged - €40
- Joint membership (two people at one address) - €93
